In the Museum Heylshof you can see paintings by?Old Masters and? temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. It is one of the leading art museums in Rhineland-Palatinate.?
The impressive city residence of the von Heyl family, which today houses the art foundation “Stiftung Kunsthaus Heylshof”, is only a few steps away from the cathedral and the market square. It contains the largest privately-owned collection of late 19th-century art in Germany that can be seen in its original location and is in its original condition.
On your walk round the stately rooms you can see German, Dutch and French paintings dating from the 15 th to the 19 th century, among them the only Madonna by Rubens.?
This exquisite collection of paintings is supplemented by exhibits of fine Frankenthal porcelain,?glassware,?earthenware,?painted glass and small-scale sculptures.
All of the exhibits were collected with loving care and a deep understanding of art by the benefactors Baron Cornelius W. von Heyl and his wife Sophie, who opened their collection to the public in 1920. Baron von Heyl was an industrialist with a factory in Worms that produced leather.
The permanent collection is well worth seeing, and there are also special exhibitions of contemporary art that change regularly.
The city residence (Stadtpalais) itself is also well worth seeing, with its magnificent staircase, its suites of rooms, its tasteful furnishings and the views of the cathedral. In the gardens of the residence? – a green oasis of calm in the city center – you can explore the place where bishops and emperors resided and where the reformer Martin Luther was summoned?in 1521 to the Diet of Worms and had to answer the charges against him.
